DHEA: The Hormone for Those Over 40

DHEA, or as its known by its technical name Dehydroepiandrosterone, is a hormone that is made naturally within the body. By the age of forty, it’s advised that both men and women begin taking a supplement to restore the natural levels. At the age of forty levels of this hormone start to drop and by the age of seventy, there are only trace amounts left.

DHEA is made by the adrenal glands and is the hormone that is responsible for creating a foundation for progesterone, corticosterone, and testosterone to be formed. Beginning a DHEA regiment can help in the fight against cancer, disease of the arteries, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer ’s disease. However, aside from these breakthrough effects, DHEA has also been shown to have a positive effect in the aging process. DHEA can help to improve memory function, strengthen the immune system, and aid with treatment of lupus or osteoporosis. DHEA can also be taken to help with weight loss in addition to being a powerful anti-aging ally.

Before taking DHEA, it’s important to talk to a doctor because this is a very potent hormone. Taking too much of the supplement can result in liver damage and cause the body to stop being able to produce the hormone on its own. A doctor will also be able to advise on the use of other vitamins, such as C and E that should be taken along with the DHEA supplement to help with possible side effects. DHEA is available over-the-counter without a prescription and it can be a very healthy addition to any health regime. Although the list of side effects can seem a bit overwhelming the chances of any occurring is very small. DHEA is naturally found within the body and so, taking it in supplement form is not harmful.
